Day 17 – Fri 02 Dec: Kampot to Kep

25 degC, 74% humidity

Listed: 53km; actual: 26km; total: 725km

Another 7:30am start so up early to get organized before breakfast. Thank goodness we only have about 26km to ride today as breakfast was quite dismal. We realize we are not in the big smoke, but everything was cold, from the very sweet black mud they call coffee to the omelet and whatever meat it was. Oh well, we could probably do with less food anyway. Toast was good!

We got away pretty much on time today and visited the markets we went to yesterday but Lucky was able to explain stuff to us and tell us what things were. After 20 minutes, we were back on the bikes heading out of Kampot for Kep. The road was still busy and we had a side wind for half of the way and a tail wind for the rest. 26.6km included the walk through the markets so we were pretty spot-on with the distance.  Upon arrival in Kep, about 9:30am, we checked into our room at the Rock Royal Hotel, changed into swimmers/beach gear and bused it to the "port". We caught a boat out to Rabbit Island where we promptly did nothing! Another lazy morning. The wind had picked up again and the swell was medium and we were all (except Bob (Navy man)) pleased to be on dry land. We had lunch on the island and it was one of the better meals we've had. Although the wind had died down a bit, it was still quite rough and most of us got drenched on the way home. We had the afternoon free before dinner at 6:30pm.

Dinner was at the Crab Market complex where there is a plethora of restaurants. Fortunately, we did not have to choose the restaurant but did have to choose the food. The boys ordered four dishes to share and they enjoyed them all, whilst Wendy ordered a beef dish she wanted last night which was really good (one of the boys ordered it) but the meat was tough and the sauce was not that nice. Not to worry, it was food and it wasn't seafood.

Another 7:30am start tomorrow so early to bed it is.

Reflections:

Wendy is very pleased she did the tour, however, will not be rushing back to do any more cycling in that part of the world, anytime soon. ...
